Brainstorming solutions is a way to generate a multitude of ideas for a solution. It is a very common approach and one that is familiar to many people. Flip charts or whiteboards are used to quickly record ideas (Isbell, 2017). More recently, virtual meeting platforms, iPhones, and other technology can aide in brainstorming and keeping track of ideas. Because it is familiar for many, it is often chosen to produce many ideas at one time for solutions.
Another approach used to collaborate is one called appreciative inquiry. Appreciative inquiry begins with the strengths, or what an organization is doing right, and builds upon those (Isbell, 2017). Organizations can be focused on the challenges and issues that need solved. Appreciation inquiry provides a different perspective, one that fosters innovation by affirming strengths and successes (Isbell, 2017). Appreciative inquiry has 5 main principles which include constructionist, simultaneity, poetic, anticipatory, and positive (Isbell, 2017).
While brainstorming is the most familiar and probably the easiest for me to use, I don’t believe that it is the most appropriate for the initiative of providing services to keep children safe in their homes. For this, appreciative inquiry is more fitting. As a servant leader who believes that motivation and appreciation are important factors in being successful, appreciation inquiry fits within my values and goals. While my organization has some work to do, we are already successful in some areas. We can focus on what we are doing well and then we can dream of what our future successes look like (Isbell, 2017). Once we have our dream figured out, we can then work on the design and finally the destination becomes the reality.
