EARLY INTERVENTION NEWSLETTER
In order for a child with special needs to acquire the services he or she needs at the youngest age possible, signs of atypical development and knowledge of early intervention strategies are critical. This newsletter will detail typical and atypical development, warning signs for parents and community resources for early intervention.
Visit some of the resources listed on developmental milestones, typically developing children and atypical development. After viewing the various developmental milestones, choose a particular age of development to describe. Review the information that describes that particular age; both typical and atypical development and/or possible warning signs. Create a newsletter for use with parents and community stakeholders. Make sure to include:
Typical development in all domains for that particular age (Describe development in PHYSICAL/MOTOR, COGNITIVE, LANGUAGE, and SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL domains of development)
Atypical development and/or warning signs for that particular age (i.e. at age 3 years children who are not yet walking/running, climbing, throwing a ball, etc. may need to be evaluated) Look at what they should be doing and turn those statements into negatives to show what the child may be exhibiting.
Information on early intervention legislation and guidelines (provide actual local and state contacts for more information and assessment.
Resources within your community for assistance for early intervention. Check in information from local schools, NC Division of Child Development, Health Dept, County/City schools, Mental Health agencies (division for disabilities) and any others that you know of or find. These may vary from county to county.
The newsletter should be formatted to fit on the front and back of ONE 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper (2 pages in MS Word. Please include written information in column format and graphics. Be sure to use family-friendly language and make it colorful and informative. You may use a template provided in MS Word or MS Publisher or other applications. Click on NEW or NEW DOCUMENT when opening the application, then select one newsletter to see all of the various styles. Then select the one that best meets yours needs. If it has too many pages you may need to delete the excess pages. Highlight the text that is already in the document and type in your own wording/headings, etc.
Put your name, course and section number, and assignment title at the top of the document.
Use one-inch margins.
Use a 10-12-point Times New Roman font.
